Sofa

This gothic, metal, sofa was featured in "Batman Forever" on the dark side of the set of Harvey Two Face.  Played by Tommy Lee Jones.

I drew the designs onto two welded together 4' x 8' x 1/4" pieces of steel weighing 326 lbs. each.  Creating an 8' x 8' wall.  I used oxy-acetylene to torch cut the designs out.  While the back of the sofa was free standing without the rest of this metal sculpture constructed, I proceeded to hammer out the shapes I torched out.  I was pounding too hard and the entire piece started falling backward. And in that same moment, I realized my welding tanks were still in back of the sculpture.  I turned around and ran like hell out of my studio.

Knocking the regulators off the tops of the tanks would turn them into torpedoes.  They have the ability to go through a foot of concrete.  When I realized nothing exploded, I went back into my studio and waited until I could find someone to help me stand the back of the sofa up again.  The tanks were intact.  But to my surprise, the back of this very heavy sofa had bent backward in a rounded way that I could never have managed doing myself.  It was exactly what I wanted.

I used all the cut out scraps to sculpt other areas of this functional art piece.  I built the entire  couch in 8 days.
